$190,000 Settlement Reached in Brickyard Mall Police Misconduct Case
Three Chicago residents — Lazendra Collins, Willie Teague, and Lawrence Teague — have resolved their lawsuit against the City of Chicago for $190,000, five years after Chicago police officers were accused of beating them during the unrest that followed George Floyd’s murder in 2020.
According to court records, the incident occurred outside the Brickyard Mall on the city’s Northwest Side, where the group was attempting to leave the parking lot as officers moved in during citywide protests. Their lawsuit alleged officers smashed the windows of their vehicle with batons and struck several of them, resulting in lasting physical and emotional injuries.
The settlement was reached through an offer of judgment — a rarely used legal mechanism that allows cases to resolve efficiently before trial. Attorney Shay Allen, who represented the plaintiffs, said the resolution sends a message that officers will be held accountable for their conduct during moments of public protest.
This case is one of several Brickyard Mall-related police misconduct lawsuits the City of Chicago has resolved in recent years, reflecting a broader pattern of accountability efforts following the events of 2020.
